The FIFA Confederations Cup has established itself as a meeting of football stars, with no fewer than 354 players having gone on to participate in the FIFA World Cup. Forty-eight players have even won the world title (30 Brazil, 16 France, 1 Argentina (Oscar Ruggeri), 1 German (Lothar Matthäus).
Even before it became an official FIFA event in 1997, the cast was already starting to take shape. Players that dominated the tournament in the 90s include Gabriel Batistuta from Argentina, Oscar Ruggeri from Mexico and Diego Simeone (1992) from Italy. Then came the Laudrup Brothers in 1995, along with Kazu Miura, Jorge Campos and Claudio Suarez, as well as Nigerians Jay-Jay Okocha and Daniel Amokachi.
The tournament featuring European champions Spain, South American champions Brazil, African champions Egypt, Asian champions Iraq, CONCACAF champions United States, Oceania champions New Zealand, hosts South Africa and reigning world champions Italy, is indeed fast approaching as excitement in the host country mounts.
Most players who are going to participate in this year Confederations Cup, which is also a precursor to the World Cup, are regarded as true superstars of modern-day football. These superstars who feature in the biggest leagues and most famous stadiums around the globe will display their brilliant football skills live in front of the South African soccer loving fraternity.
